You probably don't know this, because I've never told you. But I'm an Audible fan.
So the other day, after adding a ton to my wishlist, I decidedly tapped on one I've eyed for a while....
C.S. Lewis' "Out of the Silent Planet"! The first book of his Space Trilogy.
I don't know how you feel, but to me, you just can't go wrong with anything by C.S. Lewis! For a while I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend time on one of his lesser known works, but eventually my love for Astronomy in general convinced me that I should check it out.
{ My LUH-UV for Lewis began in college, after reading Mere Christianity, and experiencing his ability of viewing life from a different angle & giving you a fresh perspective. His expressions of truths and the depth of his statements are just magnetizing to me & feed my soul.
After reading a couple additional works by him, I also became obsessed with the Narnia series. The books are much, much better than the films (especially Voyage of the Dawn Treader)! One of my favorite parts of the story is when Eustace (who had been turned to a dragon) is being de-dragoned (it's a word, I promise?) by Aslan. OH MY GOODNESS. As I read this part, I could see the parallel of myself and the Holy Spirit sanctifying me. Eustace says to Aslan during the process, "But it hurts!" And Aslan says something like, "Only I can do this..." And it just has stuck with me since, because isn't that how we as believers feel sometimes? Our flesh is constantly desiring pleasure and enjoyment, and to have its way. So when we submit our lives to GODS will and not our own, we sign up for sanctification by the Holy Spirit. And sometimes that process is really hard - our flesh battles daily with our spirits. We must stand in God's powerful words of truth & proclaim them aloud as we go throughout our days - knowing that He is worth dying to ourselves for - and His grace is enough. Only HE can do the work of sanctification in our souls. In and of our selves, we will only fail. }
C.S. Lewis' fiction and his other works all have elements of deep truth, and he brings life to characters that no one but Clive himself could dream up! If you have NEVER read him, you definitely should check out one of his books. You will NOT regret it.
& if you're looking for me one day soon, I'll be under a blanket, sporting earbuds, drinking some tea & enjoying The Space Trilogy...... In case you're wondering it includes:
"Out of the Silent Planet" - "Perelandra" - "That Hideous Strength"
Also, last month I discovered an awesome three-part special on the life of C.S. Lewis.. It was amazingly interesting and fun to learn about him from a personal friend... Check it out here!
To end today, I'll share some of my favorite Lewis quotes. Comment below if you have any favorites!
"Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another 'What! You too?"
“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
